ANDY WARHOL, (Pittsburgh, 6 August 1928-New York, 22 February 1987) was an American visual artist and actor who played a crucial role in the birth and development of pop art. After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde film and literature, a notoriety that was supported by a skilful relationship with the media and his role as a guru of modernity. Warhol acted as a liaison between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, models, bohemians and colourful urban characters.
Warhol used a variety of media to create his works, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, screen printing, sculpture, film and music.
